Rainmeter is, well, think Windows Sidebar/Gadgets on crack. It's a ridiculously customizable desktop gadget program that, well, acts like Windows Sidebar/Gadgets on crack. I'm sure you'll get the point if you go look yourself. Here's a link to the site and a screenshot of the quick and simple things I did with it (which I'll probably end up doing more of soon):
